Big Game Mount Cost
The cost of a big game mount starts with the shoulder mount and goes up from there. Life-size and pedestal mounts cost significantly more because the form is bigger and the labor hours multiply. Based on taxidermist pricing we have analyzed, bison and caribou shoulder mounts run higher than whitetail, mainly because fewer shops do them. The table below covers bison, caribou, and pronghorn antelope. Deer, elk, moose, bear, and wild boar each have their own section below.
| Animal | Mount Type | Low | Avg | High |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bison | Shoulder Mount | $650 | $2,518 | $5,000 |
| Bison | Life-Size Mount | $3,000 | $11,378 | $22,500 |

| Pronghorn Antelope | European Mount | $140 | $215 | $325 |
| Pronghorn Antelope | Skull Mount | $200 | $200 | $200 |
Cost of a Bear Mount
The cost of a bear mount depends on what you want done with the hide. Black bear is one of the most commonly mounted big game animals in the country. Most hunters go with a rug mount or half life-size. Full life-size bears cost more because the form is large and the labor is significant. From the listings we analyzed, a life-size black bear averages roughly double a rug mount on the same animal.
| Mount Type | Low | Avg | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shoulder Mount | $370 | $946 | $2,500 |
| Life-Size Mount | $1,350 | $4,364 | $8,000 |
| Half Life-Size | $900 | $2,272 | $4,500 |
| Rug Mount | $458 | $1,849 | $4,250 |
| European Mount | $150 | $281 | $800 |
| Skull Mount | $150 | $283 | $395 |
Cost of a Deer Mount
The cost of a deer mount is the most-asked taxidermist pricing question in the country. More whitetail deer get mounted than any other animal. Shoulder mounts are the standard. Taxidermist cost varies by region and form quality. An open-mouth pose or semi-sneak form will add to the base price. Mule deer shoulder mounts tend to run a bit higher than whitetail because they are less common and fewer shops specialize in them.
| Animal | Mount Type | Low | Avg | High |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whitetail Deer | Shoulder Mount | $375 | $792 | $1,650 |
| Whitetail Deer | Life-Size Mount | $995 | $3,814 | $8,000 |
| Whitetail Deer | Half Life-Size | $950 | $2,147 | $4,200 |
| Whitetail Deer | European Mount | $90 | $198 | $400 |
| Whitetail Deer | Skull Mount | $140 | $210 | $350 |
| Mule Deer | Shoulder Mount | $375 | $802 | $1,400 |
| Mule Deer | Life-Size Mount | $1,200 | $3,773 | $8,000 |
| Mule Deer | Half Life-Size | $950 | $2,037 | $3,000 |
| Mule Deer | European Mount | $100 | $197 | $340 |
| Mule Deer | Skull Mount | $140 | $238 | $350 |
Cost of an Elk Mount
The cost of an elk mount runs higher than deer for one main reason: size. The form alone is significantly bigger than a whitetail, which drives material and handling costs up. Life-size elk mounts exist but require serious wall or floor space and budget. If you want to display the rack without the full taxidermist cost, a European mount is a fraction of the price.
| Mount Type | Low | Avg | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shoulder Mount | $550 | $1,604 | $3,450 |
| Life-Size Mount | $1,700 | $7,343 | $15,000 |
| Half Life-Size | $1,400 | $3,814 | $7,425 |
| Rug Mount | $1,132 | $2,361 | $3,500 |
| European Mount | $100 | $330 | $1,000 |
| Skull Mount | $90 | $328 | $600 |
Cost of a Moose Mount
The cost of a moose mount is among the highest of any commonly hunted North American animal. The forms are oversized, the hides are heavy, and freight often applies if you are not local to the shop. From the taxidermist pricing we pulled, moose shoulder mounts run higher than any other commonly hunted species. A European mount is the practical choice if you want the rack without the full mount cost.
| Mount Type | Low | Avg | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shoulder Mount | $700 | $2,181 | $4,500 |
| Life-Size Mount | $3,000 | $11,030 | $22,500 |

| European Mount | $125 | $424 | $995 |
| Skull Mount | $335 | $477 | $800 |
Cost of a Wild Boar Mount
Wild boar mount costs are increasingly on hunters' radar, especially in the South and Texas. Most hunters want a shoulder mount with an open-mouth form showing the tusks. If you want to display the tusks without the full taxidermist cost, a European skull mount shows them well at a fraction of the shoulder mount price.
| Mount Type | Low | Avg | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shoulder Mount | $380 | $947 | $1,900 |
| Life-Size Mount | $100 | $2,923 | $5,800 |

| Rug Mount | $500 | $1,631 | $3,000 |
| European Mount | $60 | $250 | $650 |
| Skull Mount | $175 | $262 | $400 |
Predator Mount Cost
Predator mount costs vary more than almost any other category. A fox or coyote is relatively affordable. Mountain lion and wolf life-size mounts are a different conversation entirely. From the taxidermist pricing we analyzed, mountain lion life-size mounts average higher than most big game shoulder mounts. Smaller predators like bobcat and fox are often done as full-body table or wall-pedestal mounts.

Cost of a Bird Mount
Bird mount costs are set separately from mammal work because the skill set is different. Not every taxidermist who does deer does birds well. Feathers require different handling, different chemistry, and a different eye for positioning. Flying, strutting, and standing poses each require different techniques and forms, so pose affects taxidermist cost. Turkey and pheasant are the most commonly mounted game birds in the country.

| Goose | Full-Body Mount | $225 | $666 | $1,750 |
Cost of a Fish Mount
The cost of a fish mount is calculated per inch of fish length, not as a flat fee. Take the shop's per-inch rate and multiply by your fish's total length to estimate taxidermist cost. Most shops we analyzed offer both skin mounts and replicas. Most shops won't tell you this: replicas often look better 20 years later. Skin mounts can shrink, crack, and fade. Replicas don't. If this is a fish you care about, the price difference is usually worth it.

European and Skull Mount Cost
The cost of a European mount is the lowest entry point in taxidermist pricing. European mounts clean the skull and display the antlers or horns without any hide work. No hide means no tanning, no form fitting, no eye setting. The result is a clean display that works in spaces where a shoulder mount would be too large. Based on listings we pulled, European mount costs run 60 to 80 percent less than shoulder mounts on the same species.

Cost of a Rug Mount
Rug mount costs cover the full hide laid flat with a felt backing, an open-mouth form, and claws intact. Bear is the most common. Zebra and exotic rugs exist but at significantly higher taxidermist pricing. The biggest driver of cost is size. A small black bear rug is a different job than a large brown bear.

How to Compare Taxidermist Pricing Without Getting Burned
The cheapest taxidermist cost quote usually means something. Here's what to ask before you drop off.
Ask what's included in the base price
Many taxidermists quote the mount itself but not the panel, driftwood base, or nameplate. Ask directly: is this the all-in price? A $400 quote can become $600 by the time you add a panel.
Ask about turnaround time and get it in writing
Most shops run 12 to 18 months. High-demand shops quote two years or more. If you need it by a specific date, say so upfront and ask about rush fees. Any turnaround promise should be in writing.
For fish: ask skin mount or replica
If a fish quote seems low, confirm whether it's a skin mount or a replica. Some shops don't specify. Skin mounts can shrink and fade over time. Replicas hold up. It matters.
Ask about shipping for large animals
Elk, moose, and bear mounts are large and heavy. If your taxidermist isn't local, ask who pays for freight at delivery. It's often the customer's responsibility and can add $200 to $500 to the total.
Ask whether the habitat or base is included
Some shops include a basic habitat. Others charge separately. Driftwood, creek rock, and painted panels are usually add-ons. Know what's in the price before you leave the animal.
Taxidermist Pricing by State
Taxidermist pricing varies by region. A whitetail shoulder mount in Texas is not the same price as one in Montana or New York. These pages show real, published pricing broken down state by state for the most common mount types.

What Affects Taxidermist Cost
Every taxidermist sets their own pricing. Two quotes for the same whitetail shoulder mount can be $200 apart. Here's what's actually driving the number.
Species
Larger animals need bigger forms and more hide surface area. That means more material and more labor. Exotic species can also be harder to source forms for, which adds cost.
Mount Type
Shoulder mounts are the starting point. Life-size mounts can run three to five times more. European mounts are the affordable end. The same animal can span a huge price range depending on what you want.
Size of the Animal
Within a species, a larger animal needs a larger form. Some taxidermists charge a size premium or price by weight class. A big 8-pointer and a small 4-pointer aren't the same job.
Pose and Position
Stock poses use off-the-shelf forms. Custom angles, hard turns, or action poses require custom forms, which cost more. If you want something specific, ask whether it affects the price.
Open Mouth / Custom Features
An open-mouth form with teeth, tongue, and gum detail adds labor and material. Most shops charge this as an add-on. Budget $50 to $150 more.
Taxidermist Quality and Region
A high-volume shop in rural Wisconsin has lower overhead than a competition-winning taxidermist in Colorado. Both can do excellent work. The price on the invoice doesn't always reflect the quality of the mount.
